How to Avoid Sexual Harassment by Doctors in Hospitals

101

Cases of sexual harassment committed by rogue medical personnel are indeed rare, but they still pose a serious threat that can happen to anyone. As a patient, it is important to remain vigilant and understand your rights, as well as the preventive steps you can take to avoid inappropriate behavior by doctors. Here are several ways to help prevent such incidents while at the hospital:

1. Always Request a Companion

Whenever possible, bring a family member or close friend to accompany you during medical examinations, especially when it involves sensitive parts of the body. The presence of a companion can serve as an additional layer of supervision and protection.

2. Understand the Medical Procedure to Be Performed

Before undergoing any examination or medical procedure, ask for a detailed explanation of what will be done. A professional doctor will explain the purpose, method, and which parts of the body will be examined. If any part of the procedure feels inappropriate or irrelevant, don’t hesitate to ask questions or decline.

3. Be Aware of Unprofessional Behavior

Watch out for these warning signs:

  • The doctor fails to clearly explain the procedure.

  • The examination is done without gloves or without proper privacy curtains.

  • Unnecessary or prolonged physical contact.

  • Sexual or inappropriate comments.

4. Exercise Your Right to Request a Female Medical Staff

If you feel more comfortable being treated by a female medical professional (especially for female patients), you have the right to request one. Many hospitals already provide this option for the comfort of their patients.

5. Report Suspicious Behavior

If you experience or witness any inappropriate behavior, report it immediately to hospital management or to professional medical organizations such as the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) or the Indonesian Health Council (KKI). Document the incident as best as you can, including the time, names involved, and a detailed chronology.

6. Know Your Rights as a Patient

Patients have the right to privacy, information, and respectful treatment. Hospitals are also required to provide a safe and comfortable examination environment. If you feel these rights are being violated, don’t hesitate to refuse and seek assistance.

Being cautious is key to avoiding inappropriate conduct from unethical medical staff. While the vast majority of doctors act professionally and with dedication, it is still crucial for patients to know their boundaries and rights. Don’t be afraid to speak up and take action if something feels wrong—your safety and comfort are top priorities.
